In 1999 Adriano helped Brazil to victory in the World Under 17 Championship however he failed to score

He had a good 2000 campaign with Flamengo and notched up seven goals in the league and one in the Mercosur Cup where Flamengo were knocked out by River Plate in the quarter-finals.

In November 2000 Adriano made his International debut for Brazil in a World Cup qualifier against Columbia This was Emerson Leao's first match in charge of the Brazil national team.

At the South American Under 20 Championships he helped Brazil to qualification in 2001

In the World Youth Cup in 2001 he scored six goals aiding Brazil to the quarter-finals where they lost to Ghana.

Adriano moved to Inter Milan in August of 2001 as part of a three way deal where Vampeta moved to Flamengo and Reinaldo moved to Paris St-Germain

In January 2002, the Brazilian youngster was sent on loan to Fiorentina after failing to hold down a place in Inter's first team line-up.

Parma then got Adriano from Inter in June 2002, and he went on to score 15 league goals last season.
