Dion Dublin's 85th-minute winner handed Aston Villa
a dramatic 3-2 win over Everton, after the Blues had
come back from two goals down.
Villa
had gained the ascendancy through two excellent strikes
at the start of either half from returning midfielder
Lee Hendrie. But David Moyes' battlers clawed their
way level after strikes from first Tomasz Radzinski
and then Kevin Campbell appeared to have earned the
Merseysiders a point.
However, veteran striker Dublin was on hand to hook
home the winner from six yards out with five minutes
remaining, following a left-wing corner that was nodded
into his path by Olof Mellberg.
The victory was no less than Villa had deserved, as
they started the game determined to eradicate the
memory of Monday's 3-0 derby mauling at Birmingham.
Hendrie drove them into a seventh-minute lead when
he latched on to the end of a slick Villa move to
curl an excellent effort past Richard Wright in the
Everton goal. The little midfielder then added a second
shortly after the interval when he drilled a volley
into the roof of the net and at that stage, it looked
plain sailing for Graham Taylor's men.
However, Everton immediately replied through Radzinski's
excellent shot from outside the area, before Campbell
nodded the leveller on 66 minutes. But just as Everton
thought they had claimed a hard-earned point, up popped
Dublin to help ease the pressure on Villa boss Taylor.
