Smith was caught on camera hurling a plastic bottle
back into the crowd during Leeds' Carling Cup defeat
at the hands of Manchester United in October.
The
incident led to the striker being omitted from the
England squad to face Denmark, after he was arrested
by police.
No
charges were brought against the player and he promptly
said he was looking to put the incident behind him
and focus on helping Leeds climb out of relegation
trouble.
However,
it later emerged the game's governing body were contemplating
reprimanding Smith for his indiscretion and they charged
him with improper conduct on Monday.
A
brief statement released on The FA's website read:
"The FA has today charged Leeds United's Alan
Smith with improper conduct (breach of FA Rule E1).
"The
charge relates to an incident during the home match
against Manchester United in the Carling Cup on 28th
October in which Smith threw an object into the crowd.
"Alan
Smith has until 9th December to respond."
Leeds
have revealed that Smith has requested a personal
hearing to the charge
"Following
our earlier statement on Alan Smith, the matter has
been reviewed and we can confirm he is requesting
a personal hearing from the FA and is in the process
of taking legal advice," read a Leeds statement.
In
view of the fact that the hearing is now pending,
the club does not feel it appropriate to comment further
at this stage other than to say it will be supporting
the player at the hearing.
