United issue statement

Manchester United have issued a statement to deny any wrongdoing in their transfer dealings.

The FA have already investigated the transfer of American keeper Tim Howard while there are question marks over the deal that saw Kleberson move to Old Trafford in the summer.

It is believed authorities also want an explanation about the role played by several agents in their recent transfers.

The club said in a statement: "All transfer negotiations are conducted by the executive directors of the club with legal advisers.

"In common with all football clubs, we often work with Fifa-registered agents. Any fees paid to agents are disclosed to the Premier League and, with effect from this current transfer window, to the stock exchange.

"All our transfers are done in accordance with Fifa and FA regulations. There will be no further comment."

Meanwhile, the reigning Premier League champions are on the verge of signing manager Sir Alex Ferguson on a new long-term contract.

The Scot has overseen the club's most successful period in its history and talks over a new deal have been ongoing for some time.

"We have been going over a few details with David Gill and we are not far away and hopefully we'll get it done," said Ferguson. "The quicker we can get it signed the better."

It is believed that the former Aberdeen chief will carry on at United until 2007.
