Rivaldo to Bolton

Bolton Wanderers manager Sam Allardyce has admitted the club have looked into signing Brazilian superstar Rivaldo, but says he is too expensive.

The 31-year-old is now a free agent after finally leaving Milan earlier this week.

The Samba star cannot move until January, when the transfer window opens, but clubs are now looking into the prospect of landing him.

One of the player's agents had admitted that three clubs in England want him, although it remains to be seen whether Rivaldo will be enticed into The Premiership.

"Rivaldo is just too expensive for us," admitted Allardyce.

"There is no way for us to find the extra income needed to sign him.

"When we brought Youri Djorkaeff to the club a couple of years ago, attendances went up from 23,000 to 25,000 and when Jay-Jay Okocha came in at the start of last season, he put another 2,000 on the gate.

"We are virtually at our maximum now at The Reebok with sell-outs almost every week, so there would be no scope to generate more money if we were able to bring Rivaldo to the club.

"We initially tried for him in the summer, but he was too expensive."

Bolton have pulled of a number of major coups in the past few seasons with the signings of players like Okocha, Djorkaeff, Mario Jardel and Ivan Campo - but Rivaldo seems to be a step too far for the Lancashire outfit.

Liverpool have ruled themselves out of the running to sign Rivaldo, while the likes of Newcastle, Tottenham, Middlesbrough and Manchester United have been linked.

Despite the apparent interest from England, many are suggesting Rivaldo could join the burgeoning amount of players finishing their careers in the Middle East.
