Sir
Alex Ferguson hopes to make a pre-Champions League deadline swoop
for a fourth striker - but says Paolo di Canio is not a target.
Manchester
United manager Ferguson has until August 31 to fill the void left
by Dwight Yorke's £2m move to Blackburn, providing they make
it through their qualifying tie.
The Scot has just Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and
Diego Forlan at his disposal as United attempt to wrestle the title
back from Arsenal, and Ferguson says there is a possibility he may
make a transfer foray.
"We would like to have four strikers," said Ferguson,
speaking ahead of Friday's Amsterdam tournament opener against Ajax.
"We have always worked on that basis so it's possible we could
bring someone in.
"We have a deadline of August 8 for the qualifying stage of
the Champions League and August 31 for the main competition.
"We do not have a lot of time until next Wednesday but hopefully,
if we get through the first stage, we will use August 31."
United were strongly tipped to revive their interest in West Ham
favourite di Canio, but Ferguson says the Italian is no longer on
his wanted list.
"He will not be the next one," Ferguson added.
