Spurs
midfielder Gus Poyet could be out for up to eight months
after being told he requires surgery to cure a niggling
knee ligament problem.
The
veteran Uruguayan midfielder broke down in training
on Tuesday morning and has been told that he now faces
surgery to correct the problem.
The former Chelsea star had been hoping to have been
back in action in time to face Charlton Athletic at
the end of the month and had a full training session
on Monday without any problems. However, his knee
went during the warm-up for training on Tuesday.
"I feel so badly upset and sad after being so
happy on Monday and Tuesday mornings," he said.
"On Monday I was jumping backwards and forwards
and running freely. Then I was sitting down, with
ice on the knee, and as soon as I stretched, a piece
of muscle went out of position which sets me back
quite a bit.
"It appears that during the last few months I
may have done cruciate ligament damage but the knee
has been strong enough to support me."
Poyet was due to meet Spurs boss Glenn Hoddle to decide
what course of action to take.
"Now I've had these added problems, it may be
time to undergo the full surgery and put things right
but it is a big decision," he added in the Evening
Standard. "I'll speak to Glenn to choose the
next move."
Despite the setback, the South American remains confident
he will bounce back after making a full recovery from
cruciate ligament surgery on his other knee while
at Chelsea.
"Maybe it is because I am a little crazy, but
every time the surgeon told me I could do something
in a month's time, such as start riding a bike, I
would start that very day," he said.
"I'm confident in my powers of recovery but before
I can start to recuperate, the operation has to go
well."
