Barmby Denies Racist Remarks
Mon 28th October 2002, 19:26

Nick Barmby of Leeds United has denied angrily that he made racist remarks to George Boateng of Middlesbrough.

Middlesbrough's George Boateng claimed that Nick Barmby abused him at the end of a 2-2 draw between Middlesbrough and Leeds United.

In a statement made by Nick Barmby he was totally devastated at the allegation made by George Boateng.

I totally reject any allegation that I made racist remarks to George Boateng or any other Middlesbrough player on Saturday,' he said.

`That accusation is categorically untrue, and I feel devastated by it.

"My reputation has been seriously undermined by an opponent who appears desperate to justify his own actions.

"Words were exchanged between George and me on the field. I said absolutely nothing of a racist nature, did not butt him or abuse his family.
Boateng said: "I was talking to Bowyer.

"Then Barmby just came in and head-butted me. He was going at me 'blah, blah, blah' - I don't know why.

"So, while I was walking away, I spat on the ground. He thought I was spitting at him, so he got really, really angry.

"I was just walking away, but then he was saying things about my brethren and my wife.

"What he said will be between us - but it was offensive.

"I wanted to go and apologise to him because, from my side, it was not nice. But, certainly from his side, it was not nice, also.

Boateng later revealed: "Everything is all right between me and Nick. We apologised to each other.

"I went to the Leeds dressing room and then saw him in the players' lounge. Everything is OK."

Former Aston Villa Midfielder could face an FA charge after spitting in the direction of Jonathon Woodgate.
