Fri 1st November 2002, 13:06

Middlesbrough manager Steve McClaren quits as England coach.

The former Manchester United assistant manager has quit after 2 over years as England assistant manager. McClaren has vowed he wants to concentrate on his duties as Middlesbrough manager.

McClaren said: I have decided to step down from my role to concentrate fully on the affairs of Middlesbrough Football Club."

McClaren added: "This is purely my own decision.

"I actually told Adam of my intention to step down earlier this week - Sven has known for some time too, as I spoke to him after England's game with Macedonia.

"It is a decision I have been considering for some time as my role with Middlesbrough - which must, of course, be my first priority - has taken up more time.

"I leave the post on the best of terms with everyone involved in the England set-up. It was a privilege to occupy the role.

"I gained greatly from the experience and I hope England benefited from my contribution.

"I thank Sven, the players and everyone at the FA for the support I have enjoyed.

"I'm also grateful to Steve Gibson and Middlesbrough for allowing me the opportunity to work with England."

Sven Goren Erikson and The Fa have hailed the work of the boro manager.

Eriksson added: "On behalf of everyone connected to the FA and the England team, I would like to pay tribute to Steve.

"He has been a highly valued member of the set-up, since November 2000.

"I'm very sorry we are losing him because he is one of the best coaches I know. However I totally respect and understand his decision.

"Steve made it clear to me after the recent game with Macedonia that he felt he needed to give his complete attention to his position at Middlesbrough."
