Sun 22nd December 2002, 16:12

Aston Villa player Steve Stone is now prepared to join First Division leaders Portsmouth on a free transfer.

The former England international had returned to Villa after picking an injury and the deal to join Pompey was finalised.

The 31-year-old midfielder is expected to resume debut immediately he joins Pompey and he is a possible selection in their clash with Ipswich Town.

Villa's chief executive Peter Storrie showered praises on Stone complimenting his effort and saying Stone made tremendous contributions to the club when he was in Villa.

For Pompey, they said they are please to add Steve to their staff list at an important time of the season and that it is an evidence referencing their quest leave the league sooner rather than later.
