McAteer Blow For Sunderland
Thu 28th November 2002, 19:40

Jason McAteer's Premiership comeback was last night put on hold after the Sunderland midfielder suffered a set-back on his recovery from injury.

The Republic of Ireland international has yet to feature since Howard Wilkinson took charge at the Stadium of Light following surgery to repair a hernia problem.

McAteer had hoped to force his way back into the first-team squad when the Black Cats travel to west London this weekend to take on Chelsea. But, after stepping up his training in a bid to recover his fitness, the former Liverpool star has been forced to see a specialist to assess the situation.

"Jason has suffered a setback and he is going to go back to talk to the surgeon about it," a club spokeswoman confirmed last night.

"He has had a negative reaction after stepping up his training and he needs to go and see if everything is okay."

With Claudio Reyna sidelined for the season, McAteer has been badly missed in recent weeks.

And Gavin McCann is set to serve a one-match ban when Manchester City arrive at the Stadium of Light on December 9.
