Sunderland Get Whitley On Trial
Submitted By Michael on Tuesday 25th March 2003

Whitley was allegedly a member of the Manchester City drinking culture along with Steve Howey and Nicky Weaver. One month ago they agreed that he ought to leave.

Yesterday, the 24 year old full back and midfielder made his Sunderland reserves debut in a 1-0 win against Manchester United reserves, led by the disgraced former Sunderland coach Ricky Sbragia.

Whitley got through the whole 90 minutes, and even managed to clear a Neil Wood header off the line. New coach Mick McCarthey will no doubt be persuing an interest in the Northern Irishman.

Whitley said: "I'm here to train and it's a chance for me to impress people. I'm delighted to have been given a chance at a club like Sunderland. They are a great club and I'm enjoying my time here."
